Arena original Lauren Underwood makes history

March 20, 2018

Lauren Underwood, an Arena Fellow, has won her primary and is now the Democratic nominee for US Congress in the Illinois 14th District.

In an upset victory against six challengers, Lauren won with 57.3% of the vote with 99% of precincts reporting. What’s more, this primary marks historic turnout in Illinois, with 48,743 votes counted.

Lauren is a longtime member of our community. She attended our first Summit in Nashville, Tennessee in December, 2016 — and that’s where she first entertained the idea of running for office, met her future campaign manager, and built relationships with activists and candidates across the country.

Lauren is also part of our inaugural class of Arena Fellows, where she received coaching and guidance on storytelling, organizing, and campaign leadership. And Lauren received over $61,000 in campaign contributions through events hosted by The Arena Joint Fundraising Committee.

Lauren fought hard for this victory. We hope you’ll join us in celebrating and congratulating her and her team on building a robust and inclusive, community-driven campaign.

But the work continues. We need you to roll up your sleeves, open your wallets, and double down on your support for Lauren as she advances to the general election. Visit her website to learn more about how you can help.
