Too often, those at upper and middle management on campaigns have the fewest professional development resources. That’s why we’re creating this training and community of practice. Arena Academy 201 Videos Now Live

This summer, Arena hosted a series of seven Arena Academy 201 trainings.Today, we are excited to make many recordings of these sessions available in the Arena Toolbox. These trainings ranged from two-hour panel discussions to half-day trainings comprised of multiple sessions. All together, we hosted 26 individual sessions and trained 495 current and aspiring campaign staffers through Arena Academy 201 programming. We covered topics from digital ad creative to centering equity on campaigns. We discussed the nuances of political partnerships and explored how to run vote by mail programs. Arena Academy 201 set out to create a community of practice where staff could come to learn, share, and troubleshoot together. Download the full report here.Executive Summary: Arena set out in late 2018 to solve a pervasive problem: an anemic and homogeneous staff pipeline that stymied progressive campaigns. Our pipeline is critical because we need staffers that reflect the diversity of our communities to build winning progressive campaigns. We need diversity of race, gender, class, and experience. But the campaign staff we need find politics inaccessible and risky. There are many innate challenges in campaign work: It is seasonal, hierarchical, fast-paced, and low- paid. Meet the rising class of Arena Academy Online

Our second Arena Academy Online begins tomorrow. As with all our Academies, we’ve worked hard to ensure that the next graduating class of Arena Academy looks like the constituents who will be voting in key races in November.I’m proud that Arena’s data shows our efforts to make the Academy accessible to anyone who wants to join have paid off. To date, 68% of all Academy attendees have received registrations scholarships. 62% of Academy grads have been women or nonbinary, and 54% have been people of color. Yesterday, 250 current and aspiring staffers arrived in Phoenix to start our final Arena Academy of 2019.When our fifth Arena Academy ends on Monday, we’ll have reached our goal of training 1,000 aspiring campaign staffers this year. That’s 1,000 folks trained and ready to elect Democrats up and down the ballot — from the presidency to state legislatures.And our alumni are already making an impact. The Biggest Lessons We Learned At Arena Academy Houston

Arena Academy Houston was our largest and most diverse Academy yet. Over five days, 248 aspiring progressive campaign staffers from around the country participated in active, hands-on learning led by political campaign experts.These participants came from 36 different states, and 67 of them were from Texas. A supermajority were women, and a majority were people of color. Most received some form of scholarship. Five days at Arena Academy costs $300, and we offer need-based scholarships that cover everything from hotel to airfare to registration fees. We believe that if we’re going to be the party that champions economic justice and addresses income inequality, our campaigns need to reflect socioeconomic diversity.At the Academy, we spend about 40% of our time in…

What Makes Arena Academy Different

In November of last year, shortly after the midterm elections, we announced a new program, Arena Academy, aimed at training 1,000 campaign staffers for 2020.We’ve held two academies and trained nearly 350 graduates so far. Those graduates represent 37 states plus D.C., and the majority identify as women and people of color. They are aspiring Campaign Managers, Organizing Directors, Digital Directors, Data Directors, Finance Directors, Communications Directors, and Organizers. Many have already landed jobs on campaigns, and hundreds more will get trained and join races this fall.We had 1,048 applicants to the first two Academies. What worked and what didn’t in 2018

After the 2018 midterm elections, we asked progressive campaigns to share what worked and what didn’t. In the weeks following the election, we surveyed 82 campaign staffers from 23 states and 62 different races and political organizations.Read on for the highlights.
